Tour Plan Details
Nagoya Submersible Bridge
The first stop on this tour is the Nagoya Submersible Bridge, the longest such bridge spanning the Niyodo River. Imagine crossing a bridge without railings, blending so seamlessly into its surroundings that it feels like an extension of the water itself. This is a chinkabashi, a distinctive feature of Kochi’s waterways. Rather than resisting floods, these submersible bridges were built to coexist with nature, allowing water and debris to wash over them without causing damage.
Typically made of concrete, chinkabashi are practical and durable ― and surprisingly scenic! Chinkabashi are usually low and narrow, often just wide enough for a single car to drive over at a time. Their absence of railings offers an unobstructed view of the river and surrounding scenery. Many of these bridges were built between the 1930s and 1950s and they continue to serve as an important part of daily life even today.
The Nagoya Submersible Bridge’s simple, functional design complements the surrounding nature, making it a perfect way to appreciate the harmony between human ingenuity and the environment. First, you’ll experience the thrill of the bridge from the taxi as you drive over, then you’ll have a chance to cross it on foot. Enjoy the feeling of being at one with nature, standing in the middle of the river as you admire the view!
Niyodo Blue Spot: Nikobuchi
There are many picturesque spots along the Niyodo River, but Nikobuchi is widely considered the crown jewel of the Niyodo Blue area! Tucked in a nature-rich valley, the waterfall basin captivates visitors with its ever-changing hues. Depending on the season, time of day and angle of the light, Nikobuchi’s waters can appear anywhere from a deep sapphire to a radiant turquoise.
The first part of the trail to Nikobuchi is accessible to everyone. You can stop there and enjoy the view from on high, or choose to walk down the steeper section to the bottom for a closer look at the waterfall and plunge pool. No two visits to Nikobuchi are ever the same. The sparkling Niyodo Blue is magical when the sun hits the water, but it is still worth visiting Nikobuchi even on a rainy day, when the 10-meter-high waterfall becomes stronger and more dramatic!
Local folklore tells of a great serpent, believed to be a water deity dwelling in its depths. According to legend, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant was cursed and transformed into a snake at night, due to her family’s greed. Sent away in shame, she sought refuge in these tranquil waters, ultimately becoming their guardian. One theory is that the legend arose to preserve the natural beauty of Nikobuchi. Visitors are asked to respect its sacred status by refraining from swimming and eating here.
Roadside Station Tosawashi Kogeimura
Driving around, you're bound to need a break now and then. That’s where michi-no-eki ― Japan’s roadside stations ー come in. More than just a place to stretch your legs, these stops are a great way to get a taste of local life and culture. You’ll often find regional goodies and handy information about the area, and the chance to discover something new while you’re on the road. The final stop on your tour is the Roadside Station Tosawashi Kogeimura which includes Yama to Kawa, a direct sales shop offering farm-fresh vegetables and fruit. Yama to Kawa also has handmade sweets and inaka countryside sushi, a specialty of the area featuring sushi made with vegetables. You’ll find tempting options for snacks here at the end of your tour.
