 Mt. Yokogura

Mt. Yokogura, rising into the sky in the central part of Ochi Town, is famous for its treasure trove of plants. It has a complicated geological structure containing granite, limestone, serpentinite and the like, and over 800 species of plants grow wild on the mountain. A path winds up the mountain, allowing you to visit Sugihara Shrine with towering huge Japanese cedars over 500 years old, and see primeval forests of Quercus acuta. It is also the place where Emperor Antoku is said to have resided secretly according to the Heike legend, and is also a potential site of Emperor Antoku’s tomb. There is also Yokogurayama Natural Forest Museum, designed by Tadao Ando, at the foot of the mountain.
